History and Vision
30 Years of the Danny Grossman Dance Company
Today and beyond
2007 marks the 30th anniversary of the Danny Grossman Dance Company. Our monumental transition, which began in 2005, is nearing completion as we evolve our activities from that of a performance and creation based dance company, into an institute for the licensing and teaching of Grossman repertoire across North America and the world.
The Grossman Collection – A Choreographic Legacy Project
The company core activity is the preservation, promotion, licensing and teaching of works from The Grossman Collection, a group of signature, highly requested dances, many of which were re-mounted in the performance cycles, Greatest Hits, Volumes 1 & 2, at Premiere Dance Theatre in 2006 and 2007. Each of the works in the collection have been meticulously preserved using a proprietary methodology that includes instructional videos, historical information, technical specifications, and selected writings. In some cases, the dances have also been scored.
History
1975-1977 – the early years
Danny Grossman, formerly a featured dancer with the Paul Taylor Dance Company in New York. created his first work, Higher, in 1975 while teaching at York University and performing with the Toronto Dance Theatre. Higher was an instant success, leading to the establishment of The Danny Grossman Dance Company in 1977. Since its inception, this award-winning, critically acclaimed company has performed Grossman’s 41 works, in 17 countries in North America, South America and Europe.
1990 – middle years
In 1990, the company expanded its mandate to present revivals of significant works by Canadian and American dance artists including Patricia Beatty, Paul Taylor, Charles Weidman, Robert Desrosiers and many others.
Vision
“Dance is truly an endangered species. It leaves no trace of itself once performed. Throughout my career as an artist, I have been supported to create a strong body of work that is clear, concise, daring, and universal - not afraid of subject matter. My repertoire and my company reflect my personal beliefs in equality, pacifism, honesty, courage, compassion and social responsibility It is my artistic responsibility to secure a solid future for my choreography, ensure access to these works, and bridge a crucial continuum between generations of choreographers.”
